Mice invading your home or office are more than just destructive. These pesky rodents can be carriers of diseases that threaten the health of you and your family. Our Carlsbad, NM exterminator staff explains the facts about hantavirus, one of the illnesses most closely associated with mice.
Hantavirus in New Mexico
Hantavirus and similar diseases were largely restricted to the Eastern hemisphere until 1993. That was the year when hantavirus was first diagnosed in the United States, specifically in the Four Corners of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah.
Deer mice are the principal carriers of Sin Nombre, the type of hantavirus identified in the Four Corners. Other forms of the virus are found in the hispid cotton rat and white-footed mouse. While these rodent species are also found in New Mexico, the Sin Nombre virus is the only one that has been diagnosed to date.
Symptoms of Hantavirus
Hantavirus presents in much the same way as the flu. Common symptoms include:
– Headache and muscle aches
– Shortness of breath
– Vomiting, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal distress
If left untreated, hantavirus can lead to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). This respiratory disease causes the lungs to fill with fluid. Extreme cases result in respiratory failure and death.
